The quill is above all about patience. It is time's thief. The work process is punctuated with constant stops, re-filling of ink, removal of lumps from the ink thus dirtying the fingers, searching, in the clutter of nature, the detail on which were concentrating and that we lost by lowering our head. The quill, is the transmission of emotion from the eye to the hand by the lowering of the head.
The quill is a jump: you hurl yourself without a safety net. Without a preliminary pencil sketch, you swim, you question yourself. You can't control the precision of the stroke. You get mad. The ink dries up on the brush. You get mad. You fight yourself. You go look somewhere else and you come back. Addiction.
The quill is profoundness. You've finished the drawing, you leave it to rest. You come back later, and you add depth. You mine for shadows. You intensify the blacks in the pursuit of the darkest possible shade. The quill is the nuance of black.
The figurative does not speak to me, no more than the abstract. It is not because I depict a tree in a certain way that it is how I convey it. Paul Klee writes; 'Art does not reproduce the visible. It renders visible.' I think of this quote every time I take the quill. And still, I am convinced that what's important in a creation is what remains invisible yet perceivable.
