This Ansel Adam's extract reflects completely the state of mind of Christian Aussillou.
Indeed, a view pushes us to take out our camera because it causes in us a more or less strong emotional discharge that we must apply ourselves to reproduce. To reproduce, not by pressing a trigger, but by using the best way to retransmit this feeling to the person who is going to discover the image. We build a photo, we worked it, and it is only worth the emotion it gives to the person who looks at it !
“My passion and my professional specialty of black and white is due to my training as a silver photographer. Before taking a photo, I know what it will look like in black and white.”
Digital photography is mostly done in colors and can be transformed in black and white with just a few “clicks”. However, to succeed in this transformation involves much more than that.
Mastering this operation requires such a qualitative level to him that he can sometimes spend several hours, or even several days, working a single picture before obtaining the desired result.
“I think I have completed it…but NO ! I modify it a few days later, and again other times. I refine the shades of grey, blacks, highlights, contrasts, but also whites. Whites ? Wide topic…Because in realty, whites are never white ! They are a variety of greys very very clear.”
Finally, the choice of the support according to the work, the photographic paper, its whiteness, its texture, its appearance, contributes highly to the quality of the final result.
Thanks to all these above requirements and to all these technical details, we will be able to obtain an exceptional and unique photography, of which the happy owner will never weary to rediscover it.
At the time when the digital photography had not even been yet considered, his father and his brother, passionate by photography, had settled a laboratory of development in the family house.
It is thus quite naturally that from the childhood, Christian AUSSILLOU was surrounded with this passion for the photography. Passion which has never left him since that time.
At the age of 16, he offered itself his first successful camera, a medium size 6X6. He also took pleasure to insure himself the developpement of his movies and drawings.
He then attended a professional training in this field by specializing in black and white photography.
At the beginning of his career, he worked at the same time, during a few years, as photoengraver offset manager using the method of chemical development, in the book printing industry.
The outcome of the digital photography, which is mainly practised in colors, deprived him not at all his passion of the monochrome, and today, he produces as many black and white pictures as in color.
He still occasionally practises the argentic photography with medium size cameras, mainly for personal use.
